Domain Authority in Link Exchanges: What DR?
How to evaluate domain authority when selecting link exchange partners, and why chasing the highest DR is not always the best strategy.
The Domain Authority Obsession
Domain Rating (DR) and Domain Authority (DA) are the most commonly cited metrics in link exchange negotiations. While they are useful proxies for site quality, over-reliance on these metrics leads to suboptimal partner selection.
Why DR Is Not Everything
Domain authority metrics have significant limitations:
- They are third-party estimates — Neither Ahrefs DR nor Moz DA reflects Google’s actual assessment
- They can be manipulated — Some sites inflate their DR through link networks and PBNs
- They ignore relevance — A DR 80 cooking blog has little value for a SaaS company
- They miss traffic quality — High DR does not guarantee real organic traffic
A Better Evaluation Framework
Instead of filtering solely by DR, evaluate potential partners across multiple dimensions:
- Topical relevance — Is the site’s content genuinely related to your niche?
- Organic traffic — Does the site receive real search traffic? Check estimated monthly visits
- Content quality — Are the articles well-written, substantive, and regularly updated?
- Link profile health — Is the site’s own backlink profile clean or full of spam?
- Indexation rate — What percentage of the site’s pages are actually indexed?
Practical DR Guidelines
While DR should not be your only criterion, some practical guidelines help:
- Minimum threshold — Set a floor based on your own site’s DR, typically within 10-15 points
- Relevance multiplier — A highly relevant DR 35 site often outperforms an irrelevant DR 60 site
- Traffic validation — Require minimum organic traffic alongside DR thresholds
- Trend direction — A rising DR 40 site may be more valuable than a declining DR 60 site
Building a Scoring Model
Create a weighted scoring model that combines DR with relevance, traffic, and content quality. This gives you a single composite score for each potential partner that better predicts the actual value of a link exchange than any single metric alone.
