UTM Parameters

URL tags used to track the effectiveness of marketing campaigns in analytics tools

UTM parameters are tags appended to URLs that allow analytics platforms to identify where traffic originates. The five standard parameters are source, medium, campaign, term, and content. While UTM parameters are primarily used for tracking paid campaigns and email marketing, they can also help measure link building efforts. By adding UTM tags to links placed through outreach campaigns, you can track referral traffic from specific partnerships in Google Analytics. However, use UTM parameters carefully with backlinks — they should not replace clean URLs for permanent editorial links, as they can create duplicate content issues if not handled with proper canonical tags.
